Job Description
Overview:
The Observation Non-Nursing Sitter role is dedicated to establishing a protective space for patients who are vulnerable to suicide risks or necessitate constant monitoring to ensure their well-being. Using Relationship Based Care, this position is committed to promoting safety, honoring patient preferences, and facilitating effective communication by collaborating closely with patients, families, and all involved stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures that the patient is always within the direct line of sight of the observer, even during restroom breaks and while engaging in activities beyond the department premises. Records observations as per the hourly schedule and when deemed necessary on the Observer/Sitter Documentation Log.
- Notifies the RN of any changes in the patient's status, concerns expressed by the patient or family, or any unsafe circumstances.
- Assists in shaping the patient's care plan.
- Offers tailored attention to the patient to encourage a safe environment. Redirects queries and issues to the suitable person, acknowledging the necessity of seeking aid when essential.
- Gives emotional support to patients and significant others upon request.
- Performs sweeps of the surroundings at appropriate times where there is a risk of illicit items being introduced into the patient's room, such as after visitors have left or when the patient has returned from being outside the room, and records the search results on the Suicide Precautions Documentation Form.
- Executes tasks beyond the specified role.

Required:
High School diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
Preferred:
6 months of experience working with at risk patients
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:Required:
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
