Overview:
Provides supportive assistance to patients undergoing surgeries under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities:
Collaborates with the circulating nurse to confirm crucial patient information relating to their health. Watches patients attentively and instantly notifies the RN of any relevant symptoms, reactions, or changes in their condition. Assists the RN with selected patient care duties while following established policies and procedures.
One of the primary responsibilities of the surgical assistant is to help with instrument identification and selection. They must be able to identify the appropriate instrument for the procedure and ensure that the instrument is in good working condition. The assistant must also check the equipment and supplies to verify that they are working correctly
Collaborative efforts among colleagues lead to the realization of department or program goals.
Contributes to ongoing process improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data on key metrics, identifying areas for improvement, and developing action plans to address those issues.
Displays personal accountability. Implements universal precautions adequately and appropriately utilizes personal protective equipment. Adheres to the dress code. Complies with mandatory regulations regarding current CPR certification and scheduled TB testing. Undertakes 5 continuing education units per year
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent, plus
Graduate of a School of Surgical Technology or equivalent military training with surgical technologist experience.
EXPERIENCE:
1 year or less in Surgical Technology field, Required
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:REQUIRED
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) or Certification eligible. Certifications should come from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Must successfully sit and pass Certification examination with 12 months from employment hire/start date.
A Surgical Technologist hired prior to 12/31/2017 will have the certification requirement waived and be grandfathered. If the CST credential was held on 12/31/17, employee must maintain CST credential without lapse.
