Overview:
The expertise of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer lies in performing sophisticated obstetric ultrasounds tailored for identifying potential risks and monitoring the progress of both the developing fetus and the mother. Utilizing cutting-edge equipment and techniques like color Doppler Ultrasound enhances the accuracy of the diagnostic process by capturing detailed images of anomalies that aid in effective interpretation. Mastery in handling ultrasound machinery, maintaining structured reports, and managing imaging data is essential for delivering precise diagnoses and ensuring the highest standard of patient care. Moreover, the MFM Sonographer is skilled in conducting standard obstetric and gynecological ultrasounds as part of their professional responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Conducts advanced ultrasound examinations for high-risk pregnancies, meticulously examining fetal anatomy to detect anomalies in accordance with AIUM level 2 detailed standards and the specifications outlined by maternal-fetal medicine physicians within the department. Demonstrates a deep understanding of fetal structure and maturation, allowing for precise evaluations and identification of abnormalities.
Utilizes Doppler technology to conduct thorough assessments of fetal blood flow, placental circulation, and to detect conditions such as fetal growth restrictions, anemia, or abnormalities.
Supports in performing advanced invasive procedures like amniocentesis, amnioreduction, and CVS alongside a maternal-fetal medicine physician.
Uses serial ultrasound scans to monitor the progression of fetal growth, which is crucial for managing pregnancies that are considered high-risk and implementing interventions. Additionally, verifies the accuracy of diagnoses and the estimated date of conception by examining all prenatal records attentively.
Demonstrates outstanding communication proficiency and empathy in assisting patients with information and guidance on prenatal care for maternal and fetal diagnoses. Record and

Taking appointments at the Women's & Children's Center can entail learning more ultrasound techniques such as examining emergencies in the first trimester, conducting abdominal scans, and performing pediatric ultrasounds.
Consistent completion of exams and paperwork in both the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) reporting system is essential to comply with regulations, maintain quality standards, and aid in the effective retrieval and interpretation of patient information.
Recognizing and logging all expenses tied to tests, actively handling inaccuracies and troubleshooting problems connected to the completed product sent to PACS to ensure financial transparency and billing precision
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Required:
- Associates Degree OR Bachelor’s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from a school that is accredited by CAAHEP
EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- 0-1 year of ultrasound clinical experience
Preferred:
- 2 years of MFM ultrasound clinical experience
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:REQUIRED
Required:
American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers with OB/GYN registry. AHA Health Care Provider BLS (CPR).
Preferred:
American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers with OB/GYN and Abdomen and Fetal Echo registries.
