Job Description
The role of a Sterile Processing Technician I is to effectively sanitize, assemble, and sterilize medical instruments and devices to meet safety protocols and deliver optimal patient care.
Essential Job Function:
- Help the team by disassembling, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing items as necessary.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of disassembling, reassembling, packing, and sterilizing materials.
- Shows proficiency in identifying the suitable approaches for instrument maintenance, including handwashing, mechanical washing, and high-level disinfection, particularly concerning the elimination of protein and corrosion, as well as organizing instruments for potential repair services.
- Supports the team in ensuring the adequate cleaning of portable medical devices.
- Examines critical elements in devices and gear to confirm their proper function and detect any indications of deterioration.
- Exhibits expertise in using decontamination equipment effectively by ensuring proper cleaning, loading, temperature management, and dealing with problems that may arise.
- Supervises quality control measures to identify any quality discrepancies and takes corrective actions to resolve them before the product is dispatched.
- Engages in biological monitoring as a measure to guarantee the quality and efficiency of sterilization equipment.
- Confirms the testing of all instruments and decontamination devices for any bioburden residue.
- Engages in a proactive quality control scheme that entails the random examination of sample trays using prescribed procedures to record any instances of non-compliance, thereby upholding the overall quality of the end product.
- Exhibits proficiency in conducting and analyzing effectiveness assessments for sterilization, high-level disinfection, and washer decontaminators.
- Familiarize yourself with the guidelines concerning the release of instruments post-sterilization and conduct all essential assessments and paperwork before making the equipment available for use.
- Follows up if there are variations in the process.
- Promptly attends to material demands from procedural sections and ensures timely delivery to the right department.
- Involves actively in preserving current departmental policies and procedures, aims, and standards related to improving quality, safety, and environmental and infection control.
- Effectively communicates and coordinates with the team and other divisions to ensure the best possible patient care.
- Exhibits versatility in both mindset and responses, grasping the complexities of group relationships.
- Completes any other assigned responsibilities.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: Associate Degree
Experience
- Preferred: Six months of experience in a hospital environment or sterile processing department
