Job Description

Overview:

The Oncology Data Specialist is responsible for summarizing patient cancer diagnoses reported by physicians at Cone Health. This position assists in the growth of the cancer program, maintains adherence to data reporting regulations, and acts as a vital source of cancer-related knowledge to aid in cancer prevention and management.

  • Engages in a range of activities related to gathering and summarizing medical documentation from various healthcare facilities and clinical settings.
  • Understanding fundamental human and microscopic body structures, identifying different types of tumors, and utilizing staging methodologies.
  • Understanding the variances among benign, uncertain potential, and malignant tumors is essential.
  • Understanding the diagnostic techniques employed to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate the severity of the condition in order to identify and categorize the main location(s), type of cell growth, disease progression, areas affected by spreading, and therapies administered.
  • Enters information into cancer registry software in compliance with regulations set forth by the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry (NCCCR).

Responsibilities:

Processes various medical information stored in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) by summarizing and organizing it according to approved data protocols, adhering to company policies.

Helps in verifying the thoroughness and precision of information gathered or recorded by doctors, medical facility employees, or physician office staff.

Evaluates benchmarking documents with guidance and collaborates with data stakeholders within the department, healthcare system, and providers to gain a deeper insight into the data and its gathering process.

Endorses the use of data collection tools such as Premier, Digital Innovation Registries, and other similar software from various providers.

Takes part in the advancement and execution of quality assurance measures.

Helps verify the eligibility of pending cases for reporting under close supervision.

Carries out additional responsibilities as required.

  • Determining and categorizing the main location of cancer, considering the risk of metastasis to additional organs, tissues, and the lymphatic network throughout the body.
  • Analyzes therapy evaluations like surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone treatment, immune therapy, and innovative treatments used for the final resolution of cancer.
  • Providing abstracts within half a year of initial diagnosis as mandated by NCCCR regulations.
  • Keeps an ongoing record that is not fully updated each month.
  • Engages in the progress and supervision of quality assurance measures.
  • Being able to adapt and be versatile in a dynamic workplace that demands constant skill enhancement is essential.

Preference is given to candidates with a solid background in EPIC and CRStar
