Job Description

The responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Technician I include the proper decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of medical tools and equipment to adhere to safety guidelines and enhance patient care quality.

Essential Job Function:

  • Assist the team by helping with disassembly, assembly, packaging, and sterilization as requested.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of disassembling, assembling, packing, and sterilizing items.
  • Displays knowledge in determining the proper strategies for instrument upkeep, like hand sterilization, using machinery for washing, or employing intense disinfection methods, particularly in addressing protein and rust removal and in categorizing instruments for potential repairs.
  • Assists team members in ensuring that mobile patient equipment is cleaned appropriately.
  • Verifies critical components in instruments and equipment to guarantee their effective operation and intact condition.
  • Exhibits expertise in operating decontamination equipment efficiently, ensuring optimal cleaning, correct loading procedures, maintaining the right temperature, and resolving any malfunctions.
  • Supervises quality checks and resolves any quality issues to ensure they are rectified before the product exits the department.
  • Undertakes biological monitoring procedures to uphold the standards and efficiency of sterilization equipment.
  • Validates the testing of all tools and decontamination equipment to ensure the absence of residual bioburden.
  • Involves in a proactive quality assurance scheme through the random examination of sample trays following a predefined protocol and noting any shortcomings to safeguard the quality of the final output.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records, including sterilization logs, temperature readings, and other necessary paperwork.
  • Grasp the protocols regarding the release of sterilized equipment and undertake all essential examinations and paperwork before giving the green light for a tray to be used.
  • Verifies if there are any inconsistencies during the implementation.
  • Promptly delivers requested supplies to the correct unit from procedural areas and ensures accuracy in fulfilling the orders.
  • Takes an active role in ensuring the continuation of departmental policies and procedures while also contributing to quality enhancement, safety promotion, adherence to environmental norms, and infection control measures.
  • Takes initiative to coordinate with team members and other sectors in order to enhance patient care effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Displays versatility in thinking and behaviors, recognizing the dynamics within a team.
  • Undertakes any other related assignments as delegated.

Education

  • Required: Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a Medical School recognized by the North Carolina Medical Board.
  • Also medical degrees from other countries that are equivalent to the United States MD or DO degrees from a Medical School recognized by the North Carolina Medical Board.

Experience

  • Required: Completed appropriate residency training (and fellowship training as required). NOTE required fellowship trained, neurocritical care. Board certified neurocritical care.

Licensure/Certification/Listing

  • REQUIRED: Practitioner must have completed the number of years in a residency program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and met all other requirements for eligibility to receive board certification recognized by either the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association in the primary medical specialty (or subspecialty) for which the Practitioner is applying for Clinical Privileges. If five (5) or more years have elapsed since the Practitioner completed such residency program, the Practitioner currently must have board-certification recognized by either the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association in such specialty (or subspecialty). Fully licensed to practice Medicine in the state of NC. Meets requirements of the Moses Cone Health System Medical Staff by-laws and obtains the appropriate level of medical staff privileges. The Practitioner must have a current, and valid DEA registration number, with no involuntary limitations on prescriptive authority (schedule limitations) resulting from DEA disciplinary actions. Each Practitioner shall maintain in force professional liability insurance as determined by the Moses Cone Health System Medical Executive Committee and Board of Trustees; currently $1 million each incident and each occurrence, and $3 million aggregate. The Practitioner must provide proof of professional liability insurance coverage, with a current certificate of insurance or a current copy of the policy. The professional liability insurance coverage shall be with a company approved by the North Carolina Insurance Commission and otherwise satisfactory to the Board of Trustees.
