Job Description
The Certified Medical Assistant delivers collaborative, team-oriented patient care under the direction of the provider, following established care plans tailored to each patient’s condition, needs, and age. Working under close supervision, this role supports nursing, laboratory, clerical, and physician staff to help ensure effective care delivery and positive patient outcomes.
Essential Job Function
- Assists in collection of patient data including biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors.
- Records patient information, including vital signs, and carries out the established plan of care as directed by the provider.
- Implements protocols/standing orders based on patient complaint or reason for visit.
- Performs 12-lead EKGs, select respiratory care procedures and other assigned patient care for which adequate training has been provided and for which competencies have been demonstrated.
- Administers oral and injectable medications—including immunizations, controlled substances, therapeutic injections, skin tests, and other treatments—in accordance with established policies, procedures, and medical assisting standards, under the supervision of a physician.
- Completes prior authorizations for medications as needed and communicates physician prescriptions to pharmacies by phone and fax as needed.
- Oversees appointment bookings, ensuring preferences are given to patients in emergency situations and maintains timely flow of patients.
- Ensures all medical assistant procedures are documented accurately, thoroughly, and promptly within the patient’s medical record.
- Obtains all appropriate prior authorization or pre-certification for patients in order to comply with safety standards.
- Conveys patient status, inquiries, and concerns to nursing staff and physicians to ensure appropriate triage and timely responses.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or EquivalentPreferred: Medical Assistant Program
Experience
- Required: NonePreferred: Completion of medical assistant program including clinical rotation and physician office experience
Licensure/Certification/Listing
- Required:Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA)/Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required from one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Allied Health - RMA(AAH), National Health career Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA), American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider. **Participation in a clinical orientation, competency evaluation, and ability to pass a clinical skills assessment and medication administration test within ninety (90) days of hire, and within 3 attempts.**
