Job Description
Working alongside the Registered Nurse and following Trauma Informed Care principles, the Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary assists in providing therapeutic services to psychiatric patients as per the treatment plan. With oversight in routine scenarios, this role caters to patients with mental health disorders of all ages through a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as educational sessions and individual interactions.
Essential Job Function:
- Scrutinizes and informs the Registered Nurse of any developments in patient symptoms and behaviors to facilitate alterations to the care plan.
- Plays a role in encouraging productive and considerate communication with patients and families to keep them informed and engaged, including by organizing educational workshops for patients.
- Executes safety examinations and environmental monitoring, recording procedures and communicating updates to the Registered Nurse.
- Reviews supply stocks to meet patient and nursing demands and budget constraints as part of the department's overarching goals.
- Assists in patient care responsibilities as delegated by the Registered Nurse, which may involve monitoring vital signs, checking capillary blood glucose levels, setting up EKG tests, helping with patient transfers, and supporting mobility and elimination tasks.
- Reacting with empathy and sensitivity to the verbal and nonverbal cues exhibited by individuals under psychiatric care to facilitate effective communication and support their needs.
- Carries out extra duties as needed.
Education:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or Associate's degree in human service field preferred.
Experience:
- Preferred: A minimum of one year of experience in behavioral health field or health care field.
Licensure/Certification/Listing:
- Required: BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR (verbal and physical de-escalation) to be successfully completed within the first 30 days of hire date.
- Preferred: Listed as a Nursing Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; Certification through American Association of Psychiatric Technician NCPT Certification Level I-II.
