Overview:
Functioning within a hierarchical structure, the second-tier Certified Medical Assistant contributes to the team-based delivery of patient care under the Provider's guidance and in adherence to customary care strategies suitable for the patient's state, requirements, and age group. The type of care dispensed on a daily basis varies based on the specialty and dimensions of the practice. Operating with a level of oversight, this position offers assistance to nursing, laboratory, administrative, and physician personnel to drive positive patient outcomes and treatment. Furthermore, this individual is proficient in transitioning to alternative roles, locations, and fields to bolster the practice in areas such as front desk operations, check-out processes, appointment scheduling, and laboratory services as necessary.
Responsibilities:
- Guides and nurtures medical assistant students and newly recruited professionals in their learning and development.
- Competent assessor for clinical capabilities. Coordinates and provides annual educational sessions to employees at the behest of management.
- Leads the daily team meetings to encourage communication and coordination among clinic staff members.
- Takes charge of quality or process improvement projects within the clinic, as per the instructions of the leadership.
- Responsible for managing the clinic's procurement of supplies and medications to guarantee their availability.
- Enters vital statistics and follows through with the designated course of action from the Provider.
- Formulates protocols and standing orders according to the patient's stated concerns or visit motives.
- Undertakes 12-lead electrocardiography tasks, performs designated respiratory care procedures, delivers patient care as assigned, and offers assistance to providers in specialized procedures after receiving appropriate training and demonstrating necessary competencies.
- Provides oral and injectable medications, which encompass immunizations, controlled substances, therapeutic injections, skin tests, and alternative treatment methods, as outlined by set protocols and guidelines in medical assisting standards, under the supervision of overseeing physicians.
- Executes medication prior authorizations when necessary and communicates physician's medication orders to pharmacies via phone and fax as appropriate.
- Records all medical assistant procedures with precision, thoroughness, and timeliness in the medical documentation.
- Transmits patient conditions, inquiries, and apprehensions to nursing staff and physician to triage and manage messages in a timely manner.
- Undertakes supplementary duties as instructed.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Medical Assistant Program
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 2 years' work experience as Certified Medical Assistant
Preferred: SPICE Training, Fit-Test Training, Member of professional organization eg AAMA, experience leading quality or process improvement projects, experienced trainer, experienced in practice front office roles.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:Required:
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA)/Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required from one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Allied Health - RMA(AAH), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA), American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
- BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Preferred: Advanced Certification in addition to BLS (ACLS, PALS, etc) - Participation in a clinical orientation, competency evaluation, and ability to pass a clinical skills assessment and medication administration test within ninety (90) days of hire, and within 3 attempts.
- Medical Assistant Clinical Ladder Requires ongoing demonstration of competency validation to remain in the Medical Assistant II Certified role. Refer to the Clinical Ladder Assessment for a list to select five items annually. These are documented throughout the year as part of annual evaluation.
