Job Description
The Professional Physician Coder is responsible for accurately accessing physician billing systems and health information platforms to obtain required records for precise coding and billing of physician and mid-level provider services. This is an entry-level role in professional physician coding.
Essential Job Function
- Examines medical records and assigns codes for physician services using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS classification systems.
- Codes diagnoses, co-morbidities, complications, procedures, supplies, materials, injections, and medications using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS classification systems.
- Assists with the Central Business Office to ensure appropriate and complete follow up of patient accounts to maximize reimbursement (ie, Insurance Denials).
- Reports any identified compliance violations to the Team Lead, Manager, or Compliance department during the review process.
- Communicates effectively with physicians, physician extenders, physician offices, members of the coding team and manager.
- Uses available departmental resources to ensure accurate coding practices.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Ensures regular and punctual attendance aligned with organizational standards and applicable laws, including ADA and FMLA guidelines.
- Completes other responsibilities as assigned by management.
Education
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent; Computer/typing literacy, knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Medical terminology requiredPreferred: Associate degree preferably with Medical Office Billing
Experience
- Required: Entry level physician certified coding experience in professional or physician practice coding. Preferred: Prior physician practice experience is highly desirable.
Licensure/Certification/Listing
- Required: One of the following national certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders. CPC-A is a minimum requirement. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Medical Coder (CMC) through Practice Management Institute.
