Job Description

Overview:

The Medical Assistant II Certified provides team-based patient care as directed by the Provider and according to standard plans of care appropriate to the patient's condition, needs, and/or age. The daily care provided varies based on the specialty and practice size. Working under moderate supervision, this role provides support to nursing, lab, clerical, and Physician staff to facilitate positive patient outcomes and care. This role also is cross trained to alternate positions, sites, and specialties to support the practice in the front office, check-out, scheduling, and laboratory as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports and advises medical assistants who are new to the profession, as well as those in training.
  • Proficient judge for clinical competencies. Sets up and offers annual educational seminars to staff when called upon by leadership.
  • Facilitates daily huddles to promote effective communication and coordination within the clinic staff.
  • Directs and implements projects focused on enhancing quality or refining processes in the clinic at the behest of leadership.
  • Handles the supply and medication ordering responsibilities within the clinic to uphold operational efficiency.
  • Inputs essential data, including vital signs, and enacts the specified care plan as directed by the healthcare practitioner.
  • Creates directives and standard procedures based on the patient's complaint or visit justification.
  • Conducts 12-lead EKG tests, implements select respiratory care techniques, carries out assigned patient care responsibilities, and aids providers in specialized procedures for which sufficient training has been received and competencies have been exhibited.
  • Administers oral and parenteral medications, including immunizations, controlled substances, therapeutic injections, skin tests, and other treatment options, based on specified policies and procedures and professional medical assisting standards, while under the direction of supervising physicians.
  • Conducts prior authorizations for medications as required and transmits physician-directed prescriptions to pharmacies by phone and fax if needed.
  • Keeps detailed, exhaustive, and timely records of each medical assistant procedure conducted in the patient's medical chart.
  • Passes on details regarding the patient's state, inquiries, and anxieties to the nursing staff and doctor to organize and address messages accordingly.
  • Performs other tasks as delegated.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred: Medical Assistant Program

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 2 years' work experience as Certified Medical Assistant

Preferred: SPICE Training, Fit-Test Training, Member of professional organization eg AAMA, experience leading quality or process improvement projects, experienced trainer, experienced in practice front office roles.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:Required:

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA)/Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required from one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Allied Health - RMA(AAH), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA), American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
  • BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
  • Preferred: Advanced Certification in addition to BLS (ACLS, PALS, etc)
  • Participation in a clinical orientation, competency evaluation, and ability to pass a clinical skills assessment and medication administration test within ninety (90) days of hire, and within 3 attempts.
  • Medical Assistant Clinical Ladder Requires ongoing demonstration of competency validation to remain in the Medical Assistant II Certified role. Refer to the Clinical Ladder Assessment for a list to select five items annually. These are documented throughout the year as part of annual evaluation.
