Job Description
The Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary aids in the provision of therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse and in accordance with Trauma Informed Care principles and the established treatment plan. In situations where supervision is standard, this role supports individuals with psychiatric conditions throughout the lifespan by participating in treatment programs that include educational groups and one-on-one interactions.
Essential Job Function
- Watches for changes in patient symptoms and behaviors and relays findings to the Registered Nurse for potential care plan modifications.
- Supports the practice of communicating effectively and compassionately with patients and their families to ensure their participation in the care journey, which may involve facilitating educational programs for patients.
- Performs safety audits and environmental checks, documenting actions taken and updating the Registered Nurse on progress.
- Monitors inventory levels to support patient and nursing requirements and maintain budgetary limitations as per departmental goals.
- Aids in the delivery of patient care tasks authorized by the Registered Nurse, including vital signs monitoring, capillary blood glucose testing, EKG preparation, patient transportation, and assistance with ambulation and elimination needs.
- Acknowledging and responding empathically to both verbal and nonverbal signals from patients with psychiatric disorders to establish meaningful communication and cater to their requirements.
- Executes additional assignments as given.
Education:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or Associate's degree in human service field preferred.
Experience:
- Preferred: A minimum of one year of experience in behavioral health field or health care field.
Licensure/Certification/Listing:
- Required: BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR (verbal and physical de-escalation) to be successfully completed within the first 30 days of hire date.
- Preferred: Listed as a Nursing Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; Certification through American Association of Psychiatric Technician NCPT Certification Level I-II.
