Job Description
The Radiation Therapist delivers high doses of ionizing radiation to specific areas of the patient s body for the treatment of disease, specifically cancer. This role follows specific treatment plans created by radiation oncologists, which outline the type, dose, and duration of radiation therapy required for each patient. This role uses advanced technology such as linear accelerators and other radiation delivery devices to precisely direct radiation beams to the targeted area.
Essential Job Function:
- Respects treatment protocols and boundaries to deliver precise radiation levels to designated areas, aiming to protect surrounding healthy tissues from unnecessary harm.
- Helps to immobilize patients on therapy tables, verifying they are positioned correctly for efficient radiation treatment.
- Validates the accuracy of equipment settings by comparing them to the specified treatment plan before starting the procedure.
- Undertakes procedure simulations and imparts information to patients regarding treatment procedures, potential side effects, and the expected outcomes during their sessions.
- Assists patients by providing emotional encouragement, addressing their worries and ensuring a comfortable treatment setting.
- Puts in place protective measures to reduce the risk of radiation exposure for patients, employees, and themselves during treatment sessions.
- Account of the treatment particulars, instrument adjustments, patient reactions, and any notable observations to be documented.
- Observes patients for adverse reactions and ensures effective communication with the healthcare team about any developments or issues.
- Manages tasks as assigned.
Education:
- Required: Graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Technology program.
Experience:
- Preferred: 2 years of experience as a registered radiation therapist.
Licensure/Certification/Listing:
- Required: Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy; BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider.
