Job Description

Providing medical supervision and strategic guidance is crucial for enhancing care quality and optimizing resource utilization across Oncology Services. Through establishing a strong collaborative partnership with the Vice President of Oncology Services, the Medical Director plays a vital role in developing a high-performing Oncology Service Line focused on delivering exceptional care quality. Responsibilities of the Medical Director of the Cancer Center encompass driving the center’s expansion and development, as well as executing various administrative and supervisory tasks necessary for the efficient operation of the Cancer Center and the delivery of quality patient care. The Medical Director is ultimately accountable for ensuring the completion of these tasks. Reporting to the Chief of Oncology Services are key positions such as Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Advanced Practice Providers, and Medical Directors of Subspecialty Oncology Programs

Essential Job Function

  • Engages in collaboration and cooperation with all department leaders and medical staff in the formulation of departmental policies, protocols, guidelines, and necessary practice resources to ensure high-quality patient care and compliance with regulations.
  • Developing programs and schemes to uphold the organization and service line as leaders in oncology care is crucial. This encompasses endorsing and enhancing Multi-Disciplinary Teams, Survivorship Programs, Genetic Counseling Services, Palliative Care and Hospice Services, Patient Navigation, Symptom Management, and potential upcoming initiatives. Collaborating with other hospital staff to outline precise aims and strategies for the Cancer Center and craft a structured plan for its evolution and operations is essential.
  • Collaborates with both contracted and in-house physician groups to establish a peer review system centered on quality measures and performance metrics that are in harmony with the organization's objectives.
  • Collaborate with key figures in the community and take the lead in speaking at various events and engagements focused on the organization's mission and service offerings. Encourage active participation in community outreach initiatives, as well as the promotion of screening programs and educational activities.
  • Take an active role in facilitating the establishment and progression of oncology-centered multispecialty physician teams, joint administration and physician boards, and shaping the framework and effectiveness of a high-functioning oncology treatment division. Engage in the continuous monitoring, evaluation, and engagement with all quality control and peer evaluation schemes within the Medical Staff of the healthcare facility that directly impact the Cancer Center's operations.
  • Engaged in strategic planning alongside the Institutional Advancement team to acquire funding through charitable donations and grants to expand and maintain the Cancer Center's functions.
  • The position carries the duty of overseeing and ensuring the strategic guidance, advancement, and expansion of the Research initiative, primarily aimed at enhancing protocol alternatives, participation rates, and economic feasibility.
  • Oversee all patient care operations clinically by emphasizing the importance of meeting quality standards like NCI Community Center Designation, ACR accreditation, NAPBC accreditation, QOPI certification, and adherence to Pathways guidelines. Develop and enforce best practices to ensure the organization achieves quality metric benchmarks for Value-Based Purchasing and Reimbursement purposes.
  • The Medical Director is tasked with providing supervision, direction, advice, and support to all practitioners within the Oncology Service Line, including both CHMG physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). They are also deeply involved in the recruitment and selection process for clinical staff within the oncology program. A critical aspect of the role is to promote the adoption of evidence-based clinical practices, appropriate order sets, and novel care delivery models for Oncology Physicians and their auxiliary team. Moreover, the Medical Director's duties involve mediating and resolving any disagreements or disputes among physicians to cultivate a harmonious and productive work environment.
  • Accountable for driving the operational and financial success of the oncology service line, implementing strategic plans with defined targets and milestones. Manage budgeting processes for operational expenses and capital investments, ensuring financial efficiency and sustainability.

Education

Required: MD or DO degree required

Preferred: Masters, MBA, MHA in addition to MD or DO degree

Experience

Required: 5+ years in a Medical Director or Chief of Oncology role or 7+ combined years in Oncology as a Physician Administrator, Practice President, Physician Executive or Medical Director roles.

Preferred:10+ years in an Medical Director of Chief of Oncology role

Licensure/Certification/Listing

Required: MD | Physician Current North Carolina license to practice medicine. Board certified in area of specialty.
