Job Description
The primary responsibilities of the Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary involve assisting in the implementation of therapeutic interventions for psychiatric patients under the principles of Trauma Informed Care, as outlined by the Registered Nurse and treatment procedures. In routine instances, this position functions under general supervision and caters to psychiatric patients of varying ages through participation in treatment modalities like group sessions and individual interactions.
Essential Job Function:
- Watches for and notifies the Registered Nurse of any shifts in patient signs and behaviors to ensure appropriate modifications can be made to the care plan.
- Assists in maintaining open and respectful communication with patients and their loved ones to engage them in the treatment procedures, such as coordinating educational workshops for patients.
- Completes safety examinations and environmental surveys, documenting processes and communicating updates to the Registered Nurse.
- Inspects supply inventories to ensure they meet the demands of patients and healthcare providers while staying within financial boundaries and aligning with departmental targets.
- Aids in delivering patient care responsibilities as directed by the Registered Nurse, which involve taking vital signs, testing capillary blood glucose, arranging for EKG procedures, transferring patients, and supporting with mobility and toileting tasks.
- Demonstrates the ability to interact with psychiatric patients by understanding and responding to their verbal and nonverbal messages in a caring manner to fulfill their needs.
- Executes various responsibilities as directed.
Education:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or Associate's degree in human service field preferred.
Experience:
- Preferred: A minimum of one year of experience in behavioral health field or health care field.
Licensure/Certification/Listing:
- Required: BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR (verbal and physical de-escalation) to be successfully completed within the first 30 days of hire date.
- Preferred: Listed as a Nursing Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; Certification through American Association of Psychiatric Technician NCPT Certification Level I-II.
