Job Description
In this role, the emphasis is on developing, executing, and supervising a radiation protection plan that encompasses radioactive elements, x-ray apparatus, and non-ionizing radiation like lasers. The aim is to assist in ensuring excellent patient care and contentment by overseeing adherence to radiation safety standards that protect hospital employees, patients, and the ecosystem. This position operates with some guidance to verify that experimental activities, equipment, layouts, or medical techniques adhere to the required radiation safety protocols for the well-being of the medical facility staff, patients, and the vicinity.
Essential Job Function:
- Carries out assessments on user facilities that utilize radioisotopes, sealed sources, brachytherapy, analytical x-rays, and lasers.
- Evaluates the presence of radiation exposure and contamination through detailed surveys, assessing associated risks.
- Responsible for the collection, processing, and transportation of radioactive waste materials for appropriate disposal methods.
- Manages the stock of radioactive materials received or sent out by the hospital.
- Completes surveys and inspections of locations where x-rays are administered for diagnostic reasons.
- Carries out evaluations of x-ray apparatus and mammography devices to ensure quality assurance and functionality when appropriately skilled.
- Keeps in check and sustains radiological monitoring and analysis equipment.
- Establishes and executes suitable wrapping, safeguarding, and identification according to regulations for shipping radioactive substances.
- Executes distinct aspects of the radiation protection plan which involve dosimetry practices, microsphere applications, theranostic interventions, radioactive waste handling, and bioassay procedures.
- Responsible for administering the laser and MRI safety protocols.
- The job entails serving as the Deputy Laser Safety Officer.
- Steps in as the backup Radiation Safety Officer when the designated officer is not present, which encompasses leading radiation safety committee sessions and authorizing modifications to licenses.
- Executes any other responsibilities as delegated.
Education
- Required: Master's degree in physics, health physics, medical health physics, or a closely related science, engineering, or legal discipline. Preferred: Master's degree in health physics or medical health physics
Experience
- Required: 5 years in health or medical physics or radiation safety; 2 years in a clinical setting
Licensure/Certification/Listing
- Required: Qualified to perform and submit plan reviews and shielding designs for radiological use areas in compliance with the State of North Carolina; Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer, Certified Laser Safety Officer, Certified Health Physicist, and/or Registered Radiation Protection Technologist
