Job Description
Key responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant (Histo/Fow/Cyto) entail readying lab samples for examination, managing sample accessioning, and maintaining lab instruments. Supervised closely, this position executes actions that aid in determining a diagnosis compliant with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) when necessary. The Laboratory Assistant's role is crucial in supporting the smooth operations of the lab, ensuring timely reporting of test results, and upholding high service standards for patient care and diagnosis.
Essential Job Function:
- Completes all required tasks linked to specimen reception, such as verifying orders, confirming correct patient identification on labels, checking specimen suitability, and handling as per testing needs to preserve data integrity and secure dependable test results.
- Handles diverse clinical responsibilities such as managing phone communications, processing reports, and arranging and storing slides and samples in order to promote effective laboratory procedures and streamline operational processes.
- Abides by the quality control regulations in the laboratory, logs all quality control undertakings, and notes down the calibrations and servicing of instruments and procedures conducted.
- Assumes the role of overseeing and responding to quality control and quality assurance challenges to ensure the accuracy of specimen analysis and result reporting.
- Endorses and follows established laboratory protocols and regulatory standards to ensure adherence to safety and quality guidelines.
- Meets the technical training criteria, accomplishes mandatory competencies, and undergoes relevant proficiency assessments by the established deadline, remaining current with any procedural modifications.
- Manages customer service problems by addressing queries, solving problems, and offering required aftercare to secure customer contentment and sustain a top-tier level of service quality.
- Engage with and aid patients and personnel in a polite and professional approach.
- Aids in promoting efficient interactions when transitioning shifts to guarantee a continuous provision of care and lower the probability of inaccuracies.
- Demonstrates proficiency in managing supplies and reagents to support cost efficiency and inventory maintenance within the laboratory setting.
- Displays adept problem-solving skills to ensure an ideal outcome: Recognizes potential problems that might negatively influence test performance or result reporting and employs available resources to resolve them.
- Acts on escalating intricate or unsettled matters to the designated individual.
- Document every step taken in response to deviations from the laboratory's established performance standards in test systems or processes.
- Applies lab/facility systems to precisely document lab functions using a range of worksheets, forms, task logs, and pending logs in adherence to site protocols continuously during the shift to uphold the set turnaround times and ensure top-notch quality standards.
- The tasks required for this position are determined by the physical work environment in which it is situated.
- Services like Flow, Cytology, Histology, Core Lab, Microbiology, and Blood Bank are included.
- Executes any other responsibilities as delegated.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience
- Required: 6 months experience a Pathology or laboratory environment.
